The Great Match between Randall and Martin

Description

The match took place at Crawley Downs, Susses, on 14th May 1819. Both men were judged to be in prime condition and there was a keen opening round in which the contestants delighted their audience. Randall increasingly dominated from the second round and Martin was floored in the 19th, the fight having lasted 41 minutes and 10 seconds. A baker before taking up prize-fighting, John Martin was known as ‘Master of the Rolls’.
