Johnson and Perrins

Description

The most skilful boxing since Broughton and Champion (1784-1791), Tom Johnson’s character and attractive boxing style drew many wealthy patrons back to the ring. In the 1789 fight depicted, the 5’9” Johnson beat his giant 6’2” opponent in a contest lasting one and a quarter hours. Johnson was finally beaten by Benjamin Brain who stood 6’4”. Isaac Perrins, strong and a skilled boxer, won many fights with ease but died whilst trying to rescue some people trapped in a fire in Manchester.
