Mendoza

Description

This image is considered the most striking representation of the fighter ever produced. The engraving sold for three shillings, the equivalent of two days’ agricultural wage and was published between Mendoza’s and Mumphreys’s second and third fights. Mendoza’s patron, Sir Thomas Apreece, introduced him to many well-connected sportsmen who became pupils at his boxing school. He was paid 25 guineas a night for demonstrations of his skill and a surviving playbill informs prospective lady spectators that his performance contained ‘neither violence nor indecency that can offend the most delicate of their sex’.
