Description
After losing the championship to John Jackson in 1795, Mendoza continued to be regarded by many as the greatest exponent of the art of boxing. He came out of retirement in 1806, aged 43, to beat Henry Lee in 56 rounds lasting an hour and 47 minutes. He made his last appearance 14 years later when he was beaten by Tom Oliver. A benefit, well attended and supported, was held for him at the Fives Court the following month. Although he amassed a great fortune during his boxing career, he was a big spender and this combined with the failure of his business ventures, led him frequently to the debtors’ prison.
