Description
Shown in the ring with the boxers are Spring’s umpire, Lord Dearhurst, his seconds Tom Cribb and Ned Painter; Langan’s umpire, Sir Harry Goodricke,a nd seconds Josh Hudson and Tom Reynolds and the referee, Col. Berkeley. The match attracted a huge audience and additional wings were added to the grandstand to accommodate them. Spring proved victor of the match. Langan became a successful hotelier and wine merchant and left £30,000 when he died. The two great fights between Spring and Langan marked the end of the great days of pugilism. Bribery again became commonplace and many fights ended in general brawling and defaulting on bets and stake money.
