The Great Fight between Broome and Hannan for £1,000

Description

In this hard fought lightweight contest of 46 rounds, Broome caused a major upset by beating the more experienced Hannan. Broome stood 5’6” tall and weighed 9st 10lbs against Hannan’s 5’5” and 9st3lbs. This picture clearly illustrates the organisation of a prize fight with each fighter having his own umpire, timekeeper, second and bottle holder. The purse is hung on one of the corner stakes – hence the term ‘stake money’. Privileged spectators form a circle a few feet from the action. The second ring was for the exclusive use of The Fancy and Corinthians, terms embracing prize-fighters, their patrons and regular members of the sporting nobility.
