A to Z of artists Cruickshank, Isaac Robert 1789 - 1856

Caricaturist, illustrator and portrait miniaturist.  Born in London on 27th September, son of Isaac Cruikshank and older brother of George.  Joined the Loyal North Britons, a volunteer military unit, rising to the rank of sergeant in 1803.  Went on to become a midshipman in the East India Company’s ship Perseverance.  He was left behind on St. Helena on his maiden voyage after an argument with his captain.  He returned home in 1806 where he found his family in mourning because they had been told he was dead.  He set up as a miniature painter after he left the sea in 1814 but soon turned to caricatures and etching.  He illustrated successfully for many publications, including Pierce Egan’s Life in London with his brother.  Several sporting prints were published after his work, including The Berkeley Hunt and Going to the Derby.  Died 13th March in his lodgings at 13 Pleasant Row, Pentonville after catching bronchitis.  Buried in Highgate Cemetery.
